If you're passionate
poetry... if you'd love to get your work
published, but aren't sure how to do it... then
this is going to be the most exciting message
you'll ever read.
Here’s why. Imagine walking to your mailbox…
You open it, and inside, there’s the letter you’ve
been waiting for. You
don’t really have time to read your mail right now, but this
one you rip open right on the spot.
With trembling fingers, you withdraw the letter, and read these words:
you for the poems you sent in to us.
poems really spoke to me, and I think my readers will love them too. Of
the five you sent, I want to publish the second one in the next issue
of our magazine, and the third and fifth in a later issue.
enclosed a check for first rights to these three poems. If
you’re satisfied with the amount, please let me know as soon
as possible so I can get these poems into our production process.
I look forward to hearing from
Before you even finish reading, you notice you’re jumping up
and down. Strange—you don’t remember
starting to dance, yet here you are…
Does this sound like a fantasy? It shouldn’t. If
you’re reading these
words, I’m convinced you too can be a published poet. And legitimately
published…not being suckered by the poetry scams out there
There is one drawback, though. Your first acceptance letter will make
you do the
“happy dance” just like I described
above…and it makes you look really silly.
(Trust me on this one. Do it in private.)
Getting published—even getting published frequently—isn’t
as hard as you think. In fact…
I’ve discovered a
simple three-step process
that any poet can follow to get published!
Here’s what it’s all about…
I first did the “happy dance” back in 1989. (Yes,
I’ve been writing for a
while!) I even got paid $100 for my first publication. (Not too shabby,
especially since I would
have done it for free.) But over
the years, I had a lot more success publishing nonfiction than anything
else. So I decided to find out why. How could I “crack the
code” on publishing fiction and poetry?
As I investigated, I
learned a few things…
are thousands—yes, I said thousands—
markets for your
And many of them
are eager to work
with new writers!
Now, let me caution you up
front. You won’t get rich selling your poems. If you want to
get rich from your
writing, you’ll have to crank out schlock horror novels or
something. Even the
most successful poets don’t get wealthy from their work.
But you can make
some money. Although some
publications only pay contributor’s copies (free copies of
the magazine your poem appears in), many pay cash also. Some
pay a few dollars,
others up to
several hundred dollars, per poem. But we aren’t in this for
the money anyway—getting
your work out there in front of others is what counts.
pour yourself into
your poems…and when they’re
you’ll know that you’ve truly and deeply
touched other people. Getting published means that others recognize the
of your work. And your friends and acquaintances will know it too.
I know what it’s like to
be a frustrated writer…accumulating piles of manuscripts on
wondering if any of them will ever see the light of day. But
I’ve also learned
over the years exactly how the industry works (I’ve been
published many times
under various pen names, do frequent work as an editor, and just had a

You’ve probably heard that
there are scammers preying on poets and writers…taking

sadly, it’s true.
